5 minute bird count identification slideshow
New to bird counting? This slideshow is a simple visual guide to help you recognise some of the birds you might see around the harbour, reserves, gardens and shoreline during a 5 Minute Bird Count.
It’s especially useful if you’re taking part in one of our seasonal bird counts, or if you’d like to practise identifying birds before heading out.
Learning to identify the birds around Whangamatā Harbour is one of the simplest ways to support local conservation. Our seasonal 5 Minute Bird Counts help us build a clearer picture of which species are present, how bird numbers change over time, and whether habitat restoration and predator control are making a difference.
You don’t need to be an expert - the slideshow is designed to help beginners feel more confident spotting and recording common harbour birds. If you’d like to take part in a future bird count, we’d love to hear from you. Please get in touch and we can help you get started.
