Whangamata Harbour Care is a community-based volunteer group, whose focus is to protect and restore our beautiful harbour - including all of the native, living species found within it, and around it. We want to leave a pristine harbour with a rich biodiversity, so future generations can also enjoy it.

Our BIG Concerns for the Harbour

Predator Control

We have a team of active volunteers, who run trap and bait lines to eradicate predator animals, such as possums, rats and stoats, to provide a safe habitat for birds and insects. For any urgent issues, contact Roselle Gould on 027 495 1761.

Mangrove Management

If left to their own devices, our mangroves would soon choke up all of our harbour. This means they would also destroy the harbour birds feeding grounds, by suffocating shellfish, crabs and all the bio-diverse species that we have left in the harbour.

Sedimentation Issues

Through education, we can help to eliminate some of the silt run offs that have happened in the past.

Silt build up in the harbour is not a good thing, as it damages the likes of cockle beds, as well as making it easy for mangroves to take hold.

Wader Birds

There are some rare birds, which have been in decline, that use our harbour as a relaxing spot to recover, after their migratory journey. We need to have an open harbour, that has suitable roost spots for them particularly at high tide, and with their food resource being bountiful.
